The AI Daily: OpenAI has decided not to fully switch to being a for-profit company. Instead, the original nonprofit will keep control, while the business side becomes a public benefit corporation (PBC).
Key notes:
OpenAI’s nonprofit will still be the main owner of the new PBC setup.
This decision came after talks with attorneys general in Delaware and California.
CEO Sam Altman says the company might need “trillions of dollars” in the future to reach its goals.
OpenAI started as a nonprofit in 2015 and added a “capped-profit” model in 2019.
Elon Musk and other critics pushed back against the idea of becoming fully for-profit.
Why it matters: This decision is a big moment for one of the most powerful AI companies. By keeping nonprofit control but adding a more flexible business structure, OpenAI is trying to stick to its original mission while still raising the large amounts of money it needs to grow. This hybrid model could influence how other AI companies organize themselves when facing similar challenges.

Windsurf (formerly called Codeium) was worth $1.25 billion in August 2023.
The deal isn’t final yet, say sources close to the talks.
Windsurf had recently been in talks with investors for additional funding.
This acquisition would significantly enhance ChatGPT's existing coding features.
Why it matters: This shows OpenAI is serious about becoming a leader in tools for developers. Buying Windsurf gives OpenAI advanced coding tech that it can add to its current products. With over 400 million weekly users, OpenAI is moving fast to grow and lead in different AI areas.
